Obstetric Fistula
A Human Rights Perspective
What is obstetric fistula?
Obstetric fistula is a preventable childbirth injury that destroys a woman’s life.
It leaves her incontinent, humiliated and too often shunned by her community.
If not prevented, then surgery is the only treatment.
Why do we approach obstetric fistula from a Human Rights perspective?
While obstetric fistula is a preventable medical condition, approaching it from a Human Rights perspective enables us to unlock many more resources to help vulnerable girls and women by:
Focussing on the Empowerment of women
Promoting Gender Equality
Providing Information and Education
Awareness Raising about the dignity of women
Advocacy for a Human Rights perspective
Statements at the Human Rights Council
Engaging with the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights
Lobbying Governments to emphazise prevention
